Self Analysis

Before this class, I honestly thought poetry were either quatrains, sonnets, or free-verses. I had no idea their were such poems as a prose a cinquain, or a ballad. I didn’t even think haiku’s were considered poems. Embarrassingly enough, I thought haiku’s were just short greetings because I often read them off calendars. I’ve learned so much as far as types and even structure. Before, all I would consider when writing a poem was the topic and how to relay the emotion, but I know now it’s more than just content, it’s technical. Poems consist of meters, rhythms, specific syllables, and even paragraph structure. However, poems still have depth.

This semester not only allowed me write about a variety of topics, but to open up about my experiences in life. It’s difficult enough having to write a well-structured poem, but it takes more to be inspired. I think that was the best part about this class. It not only help me grow as a writer, but as a person. I was able to relive experiences and relate to others. Being able to share our works really helped in viewing different styles of poetry, but also different perspectives in life. This is the power of words though, it speaks as loud as our thoughts.
